Sound Healing Is Not Just Banging on a Bowl
Why True Sound Healing Requires Skill, Sacred Practices, and Deep Understanding
Sound healing is everywhere these days—and I love that it’s becoming more popular. But as with any growing practice, there’s a shadow side. What’s happening to sound healing right now reminds me of what happened to yoga:
It started as a deeply sacred, skillful practice rooted in tradition. But as it gained popularity, we saw an influx of undertrained teachers, diluted teachings, and a focus on performance over true depth.
I’m seeing this shift happen in sound healing. And it breaks my heart.
Sound Healing Is a Sacred Art
Sound healing is so much more than simply banging on a bowl or playing a gong. It’s not about being a good musician or just “making beautiful sounds.” It’s a sacred practice rooted in ancient traditions that involve:
Sacred Sound Codes: Specific sequences of tones and rhythms designed to create transformation, not just entertainment.
Energy Prescriptions: Knowing how to use sound to guide the body, mind, and energy system through healing.
A Guided Journey: Sound healing is not a performance—it’s a deeply intentional process of holding space and leading participants toward transformation.
The Pitfalls of Bypassing True Training
What I see happening in the sound healing world today is concerning:
Beautiful Musicians Who Lack the Healing Framework
I’ve witnessed talented musicians with incredible skills turn sound healing into a performance. They play at people, rather than guiding them through a journey of healing. While the music might be beautiful, it misses the deeper purpose of sound healing.Untrained Practitioners
More and more people are buying a bowl or a gong and calling themselves sound healers. While their intentions may be good, they lack the understanding of the sacred codes, energy systems, and healing structures that make sound healing work.Skipping the Preparation
I often see people enter a sound healing session and lie down immediately, expecting to receive the sound. This is like skipping to the end of a story without reading the beginning. There’s a process of preparation—of grounding, movement, and breath—that amplifies the healing potential of sound. Without it, much of the benefit is lost.
Sound Healing Requires Skill and Structure
Sound healing isn’t just an art; it’s a skill. And like any skill, it requires:
Time and Dedication: In my full six-instrument training, it takes over 300 hours to cover the techniques, frameworks, and structures needed to guide true healing experiences.
Intentional Structure: The system I’ve created is designed to work every time. It’s not fluff—it’s a repeatable, reliable process that transforms lives.
Sacred Practice: At its core, sound healing is about working with energy, vibration, and intention in a way that honors ancient wisdom.
When you invest in truly learning the craft of sound healing, it changes everything. My students consistently tell me how much easier it is once they’ve learned the techniques—they simply apply the framework and watch it work, time and time again.
Sound Healing Is Not a Shortcut—It’s an Undoing
Let me clarify something: sound healing isn’t about hard work. It’s about undoing the work—the stress, the tension, the noise of daily life. It’s a practice that guides people back to stillness, balance, and harmony.
But the process requires intentionality. You wouldn’t hike to a mountain peak without preparation, just like you wouldn’t skip the steps needed to guide someone through a true sound healing journey.
When you do it right, sound healing feels effortless for both the practitioner and the client. But that effortlessness comes from understanding the sacred practices, the sound codes, and the healing frameworks.
